Some hotels get serious about child's play
by Michelle Dammon Loyalka
The Hotel Metropolis has taken child-centered travel a step further, offering an entire kids' suite designed for families on the move. The suite includes a bedroom for parents, a living room with a pull-out sofa sleeper for older kids, nannies or other guests, and a geographic-themed children's bedroom replete with bunk beds, chalkboards, toys and games, and a computer.
The suite has been so successful that hotel owner Yvonne Lembi-Detert is creating one at Hotel Union Square, one of four other Personality Hotels she owns in the city.
Having herself traveled around the world with her two young daughters, Lembi-Detert said she is always thinking of new ways to better accommodate travelers with children.
In addition offering more traditional family vacation packa ges and lists of activities and eateries for families on a variety of budgets, she's working on special touches like a multiple-choice vacation comment card kids can fill out and send free of charge to their friends and relatives.
She said she's optimistic about the future of family travel in the area. "San Francisco is a fabulous place to come with kids," she said. "It isn't like an amusement park, but it has so much character in a way it's like its own little Disneyland."
