History: The historic York Hotel has played part to various roles in San Francisco's culture and history since its opening in the early 1920s – from its earliest days as a speakeasy to a supporting role in Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo." Originally named the Glen Royal, the hotel was opened in 1922 by Italian immigrants Caroline and William Haus. Shortly afterwards, Caroline was widowed and managed the property herself for four years. In 1926 she sold the hotel to William W. Stout and Norton R. Cowden who ran the hotel for a number of years, during which it was renamed The Empire. During the late 1920's at the height of Prohibition, the hotel quietly (and illegally) opened the now renowned Plush Room. To reach the secret nightclub, merry-makers found their way through a maze of underground passageways, which still exist today. San Francisco socialites, world famous singers, gangsters and movie stars gathered nightly to enjoy illegal spirits and to hear the top entertainers of the era perform. As prohibition faded into history, the Empire Plush Room, once shrouded in secrecy, became one of San Francisco's most popular live music venues. Young torch singers, comedians, dancers, and pianists flocked to the Empire Plush Room hoping to be discovered. In 1956, The Empire entered into film history when Alfred Hitchcock's chose it as a major location in his classic thriller "Vertigo." Today, Hitchcock fans flock to the hotel to witness the place where the charlatan Kim Novak lived during the second half of the film. In 1994, Prima Hotels purchased the hotel, completely renovating the property and changing the name to York Hotel in 1995. Personality Hotels purchased the hotel in 2007. The Plush Room & Empire Bar: The intimate Plush Room, one of San Francisco's original cabaret clubs, continues to provide premier live entertainment on a nightly basis. Located in a former speakeasy, this 1920s-style venue is home to some of the city's best singers, jazz performers and lounge acts. The Empire Bar provides the perfect spot for a pre or post performance cocktail. Guestrooms: 97 Guestrooms including:
